Media Files Suitable for NLE Captioning

AutoCaption can schedule captions using all sorts of media files.  This is often misnamed "Non-Linear Editing captioning" because all timing, positioning and text preparation is done using media files instead of an external video source.

In addition to DVD video, here's a basic list of the media file extensions AutoCaption supports:

.ASF

.ASX

.AVI

.DVR -MS

.WM

.WMD

.WMV

.WMX

.WMZ

.MP2

.MP2V

.MPE

.MPEG

.MPG

.WPL

.MPV2

Your computer may also have additional CODECS that permit AutoCaption to use other media file formats.

The advantage of scheduling captioning using media files is:

  • No expensive mechanical media sources like tape decks that wear out
  • Instant cueing to review scenes and captions
  • Faster turnaround when video can be exchanged by Internet or intranet
  • Compatibility with non-linear editing systems
  • No external hardware is necessary for a caption scheduling workstation
